ICANN are inviting bids to run the .org registry. This is because there is a percieved need for it to be run by some organisation other than the current .org registry, the commercial company Verisign GRS (aka Network Solutions).
A number of bids exist. Some are for-profit, others are not-for-profit.
One stands out. They plan to run .org in an not-for-profit, open and transparent manner - as a public trust.
They have the backing of the Internet Multicasting Service, and the Internet Software Consortium. They are supported by some of the most respected people in the industry, Paul Vixie, Carl Malamud, Daniel Karrenberg, to name a few. People with a track record of working for the benefit of the whole Internet.
They have gathered together some of the best experts in DNS and registry: Rick Wesson, Suzanne Woolf, Joe Abley, Michael Graff, oh, and did I mention Paul Vixie? ;-)
What does this mean for you? It means a .org which is open, transparent and accountable to the Internet community. Not open to the fickleness of analysts and the whims of the stock market. Not open to corruption. A .org that's here to stay.
