06/22/2002 Entry: "Old root-servers don't die..."

...they just become authoritative :-).

My company hosts one of the thirteen root-nameservers in the world, k.root-servers.net. We don't run the hardware itself, we just host it, in a good place to be on the Internet.

The hardware was recently replaced, but the RIPE NCC, who own the boxes, didn't want to ship the old ones back to Amsterdam - the boxes were over two years old. So, they were left with us.

I have one. It's about to become a new machine for running things like mail and dns. I mean, why buy new hardware, when you can rescue it from a skip (that's dumpster to any American readers)?

The only problem was that it came in a huge heavy-duty rackmount case. Very OTT. So, I wanted to re-case it. I have been trying to rescue a suitable atx case from the garbage at the sites we operate at. No luck. I gave in today and bought a shiny new case.

I'll probably take some pics of the "transplant", and post them soon.
